Innisfree Aritchoke line - Review
2:48 PM
Hi there! I have a super exciting line to show you today. It's from Innisfree and it's a brand new line focussing on artichoke and hydration!
In this line are 2 toners (a light and an intense version), 2 creams/gels (also in light and intense version) and a finishing balm. I got the 2 toners because I wanted to compare them, the light cream (wich is a watery gel) and the balm!
The 4 products contain the following main “active” ingredients, namely artichoke, 3 types of hyaluronic acids, chia seed, centella, houttuynia cordata.
- Artichoke extract has antioxidant properties and is therefore very interesting. It’s also anti-inflammatory and I’ve also found a small study that showed that an in vivo mouse model cynaropicrin (a sesquiterpene lactone of artichoke extract) prevented skin photoaging processes leading to the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and melanocytes -that’s just a small study on 1 molecule extracted from artichoke so don’t take this too seriously but it just shows potential benefits of artichoke (1). We can keep in mind its antioxidant properties though.
- Hyluronic acid: humectant, able to draw water into the skin and therefore important for hydration!
- Chia seed extract: couldn’t find much info about chia seed and skin or its use in cosmetics. Due to its oil content and fatty acid composition, it could be a good emollient. It also has antioxidant properties.
- Centella asiatica: wound-healing, anti-inflammatory (ingredient focus article about it here).
- Houttuynia cordata: an important medicinal plant widely distributed in East Asia. In Korea and Japan, H. cordata is frequently used in combination with other herbal medicines as cosmetics. Its main properties are: antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, skin-calming effects. If you want to know more about it, there is an interesting review here.
Innisfree Artichoke Layering Light Skin
This is a lightweight and watery toner (water-like viscosity). As it’s so watery and non-sticky, it works great for the 7-skin method (where you apply 7 layers of a hydrating toner). As you apply it, it immediately feels fresh and hydrating. It doesn’t have any particular scent.
It’s nicely formulated as all the products from this line. It’s packed with interesting ingredients containing a good amount of artichoke that has antioxidant properties and 3 types of hyaluronic acids for hydration plus a couple of other soothing ingredients. It’s formulated without parabens, irritating ingredients and is overall very gentle. I personally like it but I prefer the intense version that also feels moisturizing. Considering it’s a huge bottle (400mL), I’ve started using it on my body and just love it for that purpose. It’s perfect to use before your body lotion for a hydration boost and to give more oomph to your lotion. For body products, I prefer non sticky products while I don’t care for my face.

Innisfree Artichoke Layering Intense Skin
This is a thicker toner or first essence that looks slightly milky and comes in a 400mL bottle. Viscosity is much higher than water but it’s not a gelified type of toner. It’s thick but when you start spreading it, it transforms into a more watery product that leaves droplets on the skin. It feels super hydrating (more than the light version) and takes a bit more time to be fully absorbed (2-5min). 10 sec after you’ve applied it you can really feel the hydration it brings, like when you’re thirsty and you drink a big glass of water. It also feels slightly moisturizing. Once it has dried down, it’s a bit sticky. So if you don’t like sticky products, you better go for the light version. I personally don’t mind sticky products because this makes me think of a “mochi” skin (do you remember this ad for Hada Labo). I’m super happy about this toner and really glad I got it!
Ingredients: Water, Cynara Scolymus(120,000mg) Leaf Extract, Propanediol, Glycereth-26, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Hyaluronic Acid, , Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Salvia Hispanica (Chia) Seed Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Betaine, Trehalose, 1,2-Hexanediol, Butylene Glycol, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Triethylhexanoin, Diphenyl Dimethicone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Hydrogenated Lecithin,Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate
This is a super lightweight gel-cream. It’s lightweight but still nicely hydrating. When you apply it, it feels fresh and hydrating. It takes ~30s to be absorbed and doesn’t leave any sticky feeling. This gel is quite watery, it could almost be a super thick toner. It has a kind of pudding texture that jiggles when you gently shake it.
If you have dry skin, it definitely won’t be enough for you (there is an intense version of the cream), but I guess this light cream is perfect for oily skin or in summer when it’s super hot. I have a normal type of skin (not oily or dry) and for me it’s OK if I layer it with other products but alone it would be not moisturizing enough. It provides mainly hydration.
Like the toners, the amount of product you get is huge, this is a 150mL jar! It doesn’t have any particular scent by the way.
In terms of ingredients, it also contains artichoke extract as well as other antioxidants, 3 types of hyaluronic acids for hydration and the other ingredients are mainly there to fine tune the texture of the gel. It’s also quite gentle without irritating ingredients. Overall I like using it in the evening after my toner, serums. And before going to bed I top everything off with a sleeping mask.
Ingredients: Water, Cynara Scolymus(45,000mg) Leaf Extract, Cyclomethicone, Glycereth-26, Propanediol, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hyaluronic Acid, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Caprylyl Methicone, C12-14 Pareth-12, Butylene Glycol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Tromethamine, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, C30-45 Alkyl Cetearyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA
Finally the finishing balm is a rich balm also containing artichoke extract and hyaluronic acid but less than in the other products from this line. I first thought that it would a vaseline-type of balm when you look at the texture but when you start spreading it’s not as occlusive and heavy as vaseline. It feels lighter but still provides a barrier on the skin.
It’s not a pure hydrophobic product, it has some water and hydration in it and therefore feels less heavy on the skin than a regular balm. It really softens the skin and leaves it more resilient. I particularly love using it before going to bed on dry patches that I may have, like on my nose! You can also use it as a lip balm. I have the impression that for this purpose it acts almost like a 2-in-1 serum + occlusive product; serum because of the additional hydration it brings compared to a traditional balm and occlusive because it seals in the hydration. I actually really like the texture of it and the more I use it the more I like it.
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Cyclomethicone, Dipropylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric/Succinic Triglyceride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Cetearyl Olivate, Limnanthes Alba, Squalane, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Sorbitan Olivate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Cynara Scolymus(150mg) Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Salvia Hispanica (Chia) Seed Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Glycosyl Trehalose, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Fructooligosaccharides, Saccharide Hydrolysate, Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Pullulan, , Butylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA
It doesn't come with the spatula.
Overall this might well be my favorite line from Innisfree. I have mixed feeling with Innisfree, there are some products I’ve tried and liked and some that didn’t work at all for me. Sometimes they also add some essential oils in their products which is not the best thing for sensitive skin but this line hits all the bullets for a gentle line perfect for sensitive skin! I also love that it focuses on hydration because that’s something I’m always looking for in skincare products! And I also think this is cool that the toners come in a 400mL bottle. It’s perfect to do DIY masks for example or to also use them on your body.
The 400mL toners are USD 36.16 (27.12 at the moment), the 150mL gel cream USD 35.16 (26.12 at the moment), and the finishing balm 16.16 (12.12 at the moment).
