Estée Lauder - Clay Masks

11:09 PM

Hi there,

Today I have a review of 2 clay masks by Estée Lauder

At first, I wanted to review the new NightWear Mask that just launched this spring but finally considering I have another clay mask from Estée Lauder, I thought it could be fun to review them both at the same time and compare them.

I will start with the review of the new Estée Lauder Nightwear Plus Detox Mask.

Estée Lauder NightWear Plus Detox Mask

WHAT IT IS:
  • It's a liquid wash-off clay mask ideally suited for combination to oily skin types.
  • It contains a mix of clay (kaolin) to absorb excess oil, gentle cleansing agents and added hydrating ingredients to prevent the mask from feeling too dry on skin.
  • In that sense, even if you have dry skin, this a clay mask you will be able to enjoy.

As a side note, I won't talk about the use of the word "detox" in the name of the mask. Skin doesn't produce toxines and therefore you cannot detox it with any skincare item. This word is a bit misleading but it's used by all cosmetic companies.

HOW IT LOOKS/FEELS/SMELLS:

It's a liquid clay mask that feels lightweight. It dries up in about 5-10 minutes.
It has a cucumber scent.

KEY INGREDIENTS:

  • Kaolin - a clay mineral used to absorb excess oil
  • Mild cleansing agents to avoid irritation of the skin
  • Plant extracts - gentian root that have anti-acne and anti-irritant properties; laminaria and other algae extracts as well as caffeine that are antioxidant.

Ingredients:

Water\Aqua\Eau, Kaolin (absorbent), Butylene Glycol (slip agent), Sodium Myristoyl Sarcosinate (nonirritant surfactant), Glycerin (humectant), Caprylyl Glycol (emollient, humectant), Gentiana Lutea (Gentian) Root Extract (anti-inflammatory and antibacterial), Laminaria Saccharina Extract (antioxidant), Caffeine (antioxidant), Sucrose (humectant), Thermus Thermophillus Ferment (skin conditioning), Alcaligenes Polysaccharides (emollient, skin conditioning), Ergothioneine (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory), Algae Extract (antioxidant), Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate (anti-irritant), Sodium Hyaluronate (increase skin moisture, strenghten skin barrier), Sodium Magnesium Silicate (clay, thickener), Xanthan Gum (thickerer), Tocopheryl Acetate (vitamin E, antioxidant), Sodium Myristate (surfactant), Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (vitamin C, antioxidant), Citric Acid, Cyclodextrin, Fragrance (Parfum), Potassium Sorbate, Ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol Manganese Chloride, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Salicylate, Linalool, Blue 1 (CI 42090), Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

THOUGHTS:
It's a liquid clay mask (more liquid than traditional clay masks) that dries in minutes and helps getting rid of impurities, dirt and excess oil.
Estée Lauder advices to keep the mask on for 3 minutes and then to wash it off. After 3 minutes, the mask is not 100% dry. It gets dry after about 5-10 minutes. Of course, you can keep it until it's 100% dry but this means that it will get more drying for the skin. After trying to keep it for 3 to 10 minutes, I think 3 minutes (as suggested by Estée Lauder) is the best compromise to refresh and deep clean the skin while avoiding to dry it.

Concerning the effects, yes after washing it off, the skin feels fresh, clean and smooth. The pores appear a bit smaller, too. Importantly it doesn't feel dry or tight after 3 minute's time. I have the impression that it doesn’t strip my skin of its natural oil at all. After using it, the skin feels soft rather than dry.

I also really like the texture of this mask, it's liquid and is easy to spread on the skin. I also like that it takes only 3 minutes before you can wash it off. Typically I apply it just before taking my shower and by the time I'm in the shower, I can already wash it off. So no time wasted. Is that a mask I would repurchase? Yes, definitely because it's so convenient, efficient and follows the "lazy and easy" trend, which I love of course ;)

As a summary, for me the biggest difference between this clay mask and other clay masks is:

  1. the liquid texture that is gentle and doesn't dry the skin out,
  2. the job is done in only 3 minutes,
  3. the super convenient tube format that is totally mess-free.

Estée Lauder Clear Difference Purifying Exfoliating Mask

WHAT IT IS:
It's also a clay mask but this one contains exfoliating microbeads as well. The beads are really small and therefore they don't irritate the skin.
It's a deep clean treatment that helps clear and prevent clogged pores to minimize future breakouts.

It's actually a 2-in-1 mask: a clay mask + physical exfoliant.

HOW IT LOOKS/FEELS/SMELLS:

It's thicker than that Nightwear mask, It has a creamy texture that dries in 10-15min. It has a scent but I can't pinpoint what it is exactly. The microbeads are really really small. You can hardly see them. Therefore the exfoliation is really gentle and not irritating for the skin.

KEY INGREDIENTS:

  • Kaolin, Montmorillonite, bentonite, and Diatomaceous Earth, 4 absorbents
  • Jojoba esters as exfoliating microbeads (thank you, Eva, for the correction about this)
  • Plant extracts with antioxidant properties
  • Lactobionic Acid, leave-on exfoliant. It's a Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) that acts on the skin surface to exofliate it.
  • Salicylic acid, a leave-on exfoliant. It is an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) that can penetrate deep inside the pores to exfoliate. It's a great ingredient for people with acne.

Ingredients
Water\Aqua\Eau, Kaolin (absorbent), Butylene Glycol (slip agent), Stearic Acid (emollient), Jojoba Esters (exfoliating microbeads)Montmorillonite (absorbent), Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate (thickener), Cetyl Alcohol (thickener, emollient, emulsifier), Sucrose (humectant), Bentonite (absorbent), Diatomaceous Earth (absorbent), Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) flower extract (antioxidant), Cladosiphon Okamuranus Extract (antioxidant, anti-irritant, prevention/treatment of photoaging), Arginine (antioxidant), Caffeine (antioxidant), Lactobionic Acid (exfoliant), Glycerin (humectant), Salicylic Acid (exfoliant, anti-acne, anti-irritant), Sodium Hyaluronate (increase skin moisture, strenghten skin barrier), Glyceryl Stearate (emollient, emulsifier), Sorbitan Stearate (emollient, emulsifier), PEG-100 Stearate PEG-100 Stearate, DI-C12-18 Alkyl Dimonium Chloride, Hydrogenated Lecitin, Oleth-3 Phosphate, Magnesium Aluminium Silicate, Cyprylyl Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Polyacrylate, Dextrin, Fragrance (Parfum), Sodium EDTA, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Limonene, Linalol, Blue-1 (CI42090), Zinc Oxide (CI77947), Titanium Oxide  (CI77891) <ILN41148>

THOUGHTS:
It's a 2-in-1 mask: a clay mask to absorb excess oil and deep cleanse the skin and an exfoliant. It contains microbeads (physical exfoliation) and also AHA and BHA (chemical exfoliants). I don't know the exact concentration of the chemical exfoliants but my guess is that it's quite low and the exfoliation is therefore mainly physical with this mask (with the microbeads).

The mask applies smoothly and tightens slightly as it dries, but it doesn't cause any discomfort. This mask is perfect to fight enlarged pores, excessive oiliness, and to prevent breakouts. I'm usually not a huge fan of physical exfoliation but here the beads are so tiny that they don't irritate the skin. Typically that's a mask that I like using every other week to deep cleanse my skin and give it a boost. If you have oily skin, you can use it once a week.

I have a quick comparison in the table below! I hope this is useful ;)

    1. Hi there, sorry to hear you had issues with the L'oréal mask. I just checked the ingredients of that mask (http://www.cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_1565272710.html). Maybe your skin is sensitive to fragrance? How did it react? Did it become red, did it burn or you got pimples?
If it's the fragrance, this Estée Lauder mask also contains some. If it's something else, the Estée could work since they're a bit different but with sensitive skin, I can't guarantee that the Estée mask would be gentle enough for you. If it's difficult to tell especially as I don't know your skin, do you know if your skin tend to react to something in particular? is it oily, dry, dehydrated, acne-prone?

Are you specifically looking for a clay mask or for an exfoliant (a very mild liquid could also be an option)?
